Homemade Dog Treats Are Cost-Effective, Quick and Easy to Make

The cost of food for ourselves and our dogs is always going to get more expense. So homemade dog treats make sense because they are not only cost-effective, but they are also quick and easy to make.

And you know what’s in them. Unlike mass-produced dog treats which can have all sorts of potentially nasty ingredients.

When it comes to feeding my dogs, if I won’t eat it nor should they!

The best homemade dog treats

Homemade Liver Puppy Treats

This recipe utilizes the liver which is a powerful source of nutrients, providing your dog with iron, B12, vitamin A and folate.

Ingredients

500g beef liver
1 clove of garlic

Method

  • Crush and peel the garlic clove and blend with liver in a food processor until it forms a smooth paste
  • Line a baking tray with parchment paper and thinly spread the liver paste evenly across
  • Place in oven at the lowest setting for 2-3 hours or leave in a warming drawer and until dry and crisp
  • Break or cut into strips and store in zip lock bags or airtight containers.

For added flavor, you can soak the liver in a stock of beef broth prior to blending.

Turmeric Sweet Potato Treats

These sweet potato bites are a super-easy to prepare a yummy treat for your dog and contain the super-spice turmeric.

This spice has been harnessed for thousands of years for its many health benefits. Turmeric is well-known for its anti-cancer properties and the supportive role it has in liver and heart health.

Ingredients

3 large, peeled sweet potatoes
1 tablespoon of turmeric
1 tablespoon of unsweetened yogurt

Method

  • Preheat oven to 130 degrees
  • Slice the sweet potato lengthwise into thin 1cm slices
  • Coat in yogurt and dust with turmeric
  • Place on a baking tray lined with parchment paper
  • Bake for 3 hours, turning at the halfway point
  • Allow them to cool before storing in an airtight container or zip-lock bag.

This recipe can easily be adapted to other vegetables such as beets. Beets have a unique ability to reduce inflammation and aid in digestion. This makes them a great addition to any dog’s diet.

Put Your Homemade Dog Treats Into Action!

With a good supply of fresh, delicious, and nutritious homemade dog treats on hand you will be able to reward your dog for good behavior more often. But don’t overdo it, don’t over-treat them or you will defeat the purpose and risk overfeeding your dog.

When using treats for positive reinforcement remember to give your dog the treat within 3 seconds of them doing the right behavior so that they associate the action with the reward!

In the following video, you will learn how to introduce a puppy to treats and then how to fade them out so that s/he does not become dependent on them.

You'd be right in thinking that I am passionate about dogs. I am. So much so that my wife thinks that I love dogs more than I love her - which is not true, by the way. I love my wife, and I love my dogs, in that order. So this website is about sharing a little of what I know in the hope that I can help others become better dog owners - a well-trained dog owner equals a well trained, happy, and healthy dog :-)
